Logline

Whip-smart Mala and NBA-hopeful Doug collide at their mostly white, almost Ivy League, and decidedly Southern university. Mala tutors Doug to stay on the basketball team. He ignites her social life. An unlikely duo, their friendship raises eyebrows. Will they ever realize that they are perfect for each other?

Synopsis

Mala is an ambitious science geek, working as a tutor for extra income. But her tutee, Doug, an African American basketball player, shows up hours late to their first session. To stay on the team, he needs her help—so Mala demands season tickets. Next, we see Mala cheering beside Doug’s grandmother at his game. A friendship is born.

Over time, the unlikely duo (he’s a player and laid-back partier, and she’s a quiet homebody), bond over their shared background: they went to the same high school, as well as their experiences of discrimination. Their friendship is cemented when a professor suggests that Doug may have plagiarized an essay (that Doug had worked hard on), and when Mala struggles to defend herself against the racist comments of a white classmate. Through all of it, they have each other’s back and push each other to stand up for themselves.
