Tangerine Entertainment and Stowe Story Labs Announce 2015 Tangerine Fellowship for Emerging Screenwriters

Stowe Story Labs and Tangerine Entertainment are pleased to announce the 2015 Tangerine Fellowship to the Labs. The non-profit Stowe Story Labs run from September 12 – 15 at the Helen Day Art Center in Stowe, Vermont and bring emerging screenwriters, filmmakers and creative producers from around the world together with top industry mentors with the aim of getting good work made and seen.

Tangerine is a film production company co-founded by storied producers Amy Hobby and Anne Hubbell.

The 2015 Tangerine Fellowship is awarded to:

  • Jodi Gibson and Katherine Lindberg for their science fiction drama IN BARDO.

Katherine Lindberg is an award winning filmmaker (Venice, Sundance: “Rain,” E.P. Martin Scorsese) and screenwriting professor (NYU Tisch/Asia, Brooklyn College) and working writer in television (Brendan Fraser, “Tomorrow”; Appian Way, “Migrate”). Jodi Gibson is a Brooklyn-based writer and filmmaker. She has made several award winning short films and attended the Sundance Screenwriters and Filmmakers labs with a feature project.

“We’re honored and thrilled to attend the labs and have the support to bring our vision to the next level. Both Stowe and Tangerine have cultivated communities that champion unique and dynamic voices, and we’re excited for the opportunity to collaborate,” said Gibson and Lindberg.

IN BARDO is a hard-wired drama about an intrepid geneticist who, determined to cure her twin sister’s neurodegenerative disease, recklessly crosses ethical lines in an all-out campaign to save her sister’s life.

“With IN BARDO, we set out to write a character-driven film set in the future of bio science.  A story equal parts science, spirituality and family drama,” said Gibson.

According to the filmmakers, the story is about the moral and ethical complications current science is hurtling us toward. Inspired by contemporary advances in epigenetics, the film will explore the drive and desire to cure oneself – to normalize the diseased element – to defeat the fate dictated at the cellular level.

“So this film is not fantasy – not a future that could never be – but a true examination of where we are going and WILL get to eventually,” said Lindberg.

“IN BARDO is an inventive story in a genre that is under represented by women story tellers,” said Amy Hobby. “It’ll be a joy working with the team to help them chart a course toward getting the work out into the world.”

IN BARDO was one of dozens of excellent projects — and five tremendous ones vying for the fellowship in the final round. “It was a tough decision with so many strong applications,” said Anne Hubbell.

Tangerine’s mission is to produce commercially viable, critically acclaimed stories for all audiences, with an emphasis on female filmmakers and strong roles for women. Tangerine has a clear and specific agenda aimed at increasing the presence of smart, complex women both behind and in front of the camera.

“I cannot say enough how much we love partnering with Tangerine,” said David Rocchio, founder and director of Stowe Story Labs. “As mentors, the Tangerine team brings so much experience, wisdom and intelligence to the hard work of getting films made. They also have the unique and important talent to be able to communicate their ideas thoughtfully to Lab participants. It doesn’t hurt as well that as people, they are a joy. As part of the Stowe Story Labs community they are a perfect fit to helping us achieve our vision. We hope the Labs help them make there dent in the universe as well,” said Rocchio

Stowe Story Labs is a non-profit community with the aim to help emerging screenwriters, filmmakers and creative producers get work made and seen.
