The Dark of Night | April 2021 Featured Film
Written by Denise Meyers
One dark and stormy night, MADELINE ANDERSON, 28, on her way to Chicago for a job interview, finds shelter from a downpour at a diner in the middle of nowhere. Inside, she finds BERNICE WATKINS, a waitress with a black eye, DOUGLAS YOUNG, a grease bag in a cheap suit, and OFFICER WITT, a shady cop on the take. Shifting loyalties and rising tensions rapidly culminate into a deadly game of cat and mouse with tragic consequences for all.
Denise Meyers is the inaugural recipient of a 2019 Sloan Foundation Development Grant in partnership with the Athena Film Festival for her work on LUCKY 13, based on the true story of the Women’s Air Force Service Pilots and the significant role they played in salvaging the B-26 Marauder from the scrap heap prior to the Normandy Invasion. LUCKY 13 was selected for a development grant for the 2020 Stowe Sidewalk Lab, was a Finalist for the 2020 Screencraft Fellowship, landed in the Next 100 for the Nicholl Fellowships in 2019 and was shortlisted for The Writers Lab that same year.
An Athena List winner and the winner of the Atlanta Film Festival screenplay competition, Meyers was one of nine screenwriters invited to participate in the New York Stage and Filmmakers Workshop at the Powerhouse Theater at Vassar College. She was also named one of the Top 25 Screenwriters to Watch by the International Screenwriters Association in 2018.
Her short film, THE DARK OF NIGHT, directed by Robin Wright and starring Leslie Bibb and Sam Rockwell had its red-carpet world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival in 2017. The film was also selected for the Palm Springs International Short Film Festival, the Mill Valley Film Festival and the Seattle Film Festival and received Best Short by the LA Femme International Film Festival and Best Actor at the Paris Art and Movie Awards.
Meyers completed work on a TV pilot and pitch deck in 2021 based on THE DARK OF NIGHT and is currently shopping the project with producer Michelle Rubinstein (EMPIRE, ARMY WIVES).
She is represented by Adam Wiviott at Lark-Spur Management.
